Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 27th December 2015
New Year Wishes
Athbhlian faoi mhaise daoibh! A very Happy New
Year to all of our players, members, supporters and friends all around the
world. May 2016 be a successful and prosperous year for the club.
Married vs Singles
Our annual Married vs Singles Charity match was
a huge success at Quigabar last Sunday afternoon. Plenty of people turned out
to watch what was an interesting spectacle this year given the changes to the
rules. The married team ran out winners once again, meaning the elder statesmen
of the club have yet to lose! The club extends a huge thank you to everyone who
took part and supported on the day. All funds raised will go towards the Sligo
Cancer Support Centre – full details of the amount raised and pictures are available online.
Club newsletter
Our annual end of year club newsletter is
available here
Dates for your diary
Our club AGM is pencilled in for Friday, January
29th in the Diamond Coast Hotel at 8.30pm. The same venue will be host to our
club dinner dance on Saturday, February 13th where we will make presentations
to our U16 county title-winning side of 2015, as well as remembering the
success of our U21 team of 1990 who won that year’s ‘A’ Championship title.
Also on the night we’ll have the usual individual awards, so it promises to be
another great night. More details will follow in the New Year.
Blotto
The blotto draw will return from its Christmas
break on Saturday January 9th. Your continued support is greatly appreciated.
Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 20th December 2015
Christmas wishes
The club wishes all of our players, members,
supporters and friends both at home and abroad a very Happy Christmas. We hope
you all enjoy the festive season.
Married vs Singles 2015
Our Married vs Singles Charity match is back for
a sixth year in 2015, with the big game scheduled for Sunday, December 27th at
2.30pm in Quigabar. As always, we’ll donate all funds raised to charity with
this year’s beneficiaries the Sligo Cancer Support Centre, who carry out great
work countywide.
Some changes have been introduced for this year’s
game – both teams will require two female players, two players in fancy dress,
a priest or a politician, a local publican and an inter-county footballer,
either past or present, from outside of Kilglass parish. Both sides are
finalising preparations so expect a surprise or two on the day!
Some interesting managerial appointments were
made for each side – Austin Tuffy will take charge of the singles, while Eamonn
Walsh is the man tasked with guiding the married lads to another success.
This should mean an even more entertaining afternoon
is in store, with all the usual craic and festive fun mixed in. It’s a day not
to be missed, so make sure to spread the word and attend on the day in aid of a
worthy cause!

The club was delighted to receive the Sligo Club

our pitch committee (Paddy Tuffy, Francie Gallagher, Michael Gordon, Mixie
Jacob, Liam Cawley, Johnny Mullaney and John Paul Carden) who put in a huge
amount of work to ensure the pitch and facilities are always in prime
condition, alongside local FAS workers. The club now goes forward to the

(December 11th). Well done to

Surf and Turf 2015
Last Saturday saw our second annual Surf and
Turf Fun Run take place at Quigabar. Despite heavy rain on Friday, Saturday was
a relatively dry day and all in all the event was a resounding success. Over
120 participants took art across both the 3k and 5k events, with a wide arrange
of volunteers and spectators also on site. We extend our gratitude to everyone
who contributed in any way to the day, in what was a superb display of
community spirit. Pictures and results will be posted on our online platforms in
the coming days, so keep your eyes peeled.
U21
Our U21 boys will commence their championship
campaign on Sunday afternoon with an away fixture against Shamrock Gaels.
Throw-in in Coola is at 2.30pm. Best wishes to all the players and management.
Well done
Well done to Marty Duffy on a fine performance
as referee of last Sunday’s county senior final between St Mary’s and Curry.
This was Marty’s fourth time taking charge of the marquee fixture in Sligo.
Well done also to his umpires, two of which were from our club (Karl Finnerty
and John P Kilgannon).
Also, congrats to former club player Aidan
Caffrey who was honoured at half-time of the final as part of a remembrance of
the Connacht Championship-winning Sligo team of 1975. Aidan, along with his
brother Liam, had prolific careers with both Sligo and Enniscrone during the
1960s and 1970s, and are remembered as teak tough and talented defenders.
Barnes Murphy, who played for the club for a time at the same time as the
Caffreys, was also among the players honoured on Sunday. Well done to all.

U16
Congratulations to our U16 boys on winning the
Division Three Championship last Tuesday evening, when they beat St John’s 3-12
to 1-7 at Markievicz Park. This is a fine ending to what has been a good year
for the team, having reached both league and championship finals. While they
missed out on the league title, there was never any doubt about the result last
week when the lads put in a solid display to win by 11 points.
Well done to the
management team of Marty Duffy, Declan Hughes, John Paul Carden and Mark
Caffrey on a fine year. The panel was: Adam Mullaney, Niall Carden, Josh Ellis,
Darren Finnerty, Finn Nelson, Rian Grimes, Eoin Hallinan, Ciaran O'Dowd,
Jonathan Culkin, Gavin Duffy, Aaron Duffy, Daniel Clarke, Dara Rouse, Alan
Duffy, Bradley Nealon, Jarlath McMahon, Conal Duffy, Jason Culkin, Richard
Grimes.
U13
Our U13 boys lost to St Molaise Gaels in round
two of the Feile competition last Wednesday. The team travel to take on
Calry/St Joseph’s next Sunday morning at 11am in round three.
Congrats
The U16 win was the start of a great week for
intermediate team stalwart John Paul Carden, because following Tuesday’s
success he had a slightly more important assignment on Saturday – getting
married! JP tied the knot with Caroline Conway on Saturday, and the happy
couple and the wedding party made a pit-stop in Quigabar for photos on their
big day. Congrats to both JP and Caroline, and we wish them a lifetime of
happiness together.
Congrats are also in order for Aaron Hannon,
Robert Grimes and all at Team AIB Racing, after they finished third in the
world in the F1 in Schools competition. This is a remarkable achievement for
the lads and one they can be very, very proud of. Aaron also won a Ranstad
Williams Academy scholarship to round off a remarkable trip to Singapore. For
more details on this great success, check out Team AIB Racing on Facebook.

September 2015
Intermediate
The 2015 championship came
to a disappointing end for our intermediate team last Sunday afternoon, when
neighbours Castleconnor emerged as 0-10 to 0-6 winners in the quarter-final tie
played at Markievicz Park. This was a low-scoring and intense affair, with both
sides giving their all. Having been 0-3 to 0-2 down at half-time, our lads
started well in the second half and went 0-5 to 0-4 ahead with 20 minutes to
go. However, Castleconnor finished stronger to enter the final four. Our boys
will rue their unusual inaccuracy in front of goal which was evident for much
of the hour. Thus the season is now at an end, and the club wishes to
acknowledge the huge effort put in by the panel of players and the management
team. Hopefully 2016 will end in better circumstances.
Back row, from L-R: Shane Hargadon, Michael John Crean, Cillian O'Dowd, Keith Mullaney, Greg Regan, Michael Connolly, Cathal Mullaney, Robert Jacob, Keith Carden, Daniel Breslin, Kevin Carden, John Paul Carden, Brendan Byron, Nathan Hannon, Brian Coleman.
Front row, L-R: Mark O'Hara, Cian Mulrooney, Kevin Cawley, Eamon Gilroy, Liam Varley, Declan Cawley, Aidan Morrison, Michael Moyles, Mark O'Dowd, Tom Mahon, Hugh Cawley, Mark Caffrey, Shane Morrison
Minor
Our minor boys also saw
their 2015 season come to an end when they lost to Coolera/Strandhill by a
point, 2-7 to 1-9, in their shield semi-final last week. Unfortunately, the
team has been severely depleted for much of the season but thanks to Brendan
and all the lads for their efforts throughout the year.
U-16
Our U-16 lads will look to
end the season with silverware when they take on St John’s in the Division
Three championship final at 6.15pm in Markievicz Park on Tuesday evening. Best
wishes to everyone involved. Please support if possible.

Intermediate
An impressive display gave
the intermediate team a fourth win in the Intermediate Championship when they
defeat St Patrick’s by 1-12 to 2-5 at Easkey in the final group game last

luck to everyone involved for this big game.
Minor

Intermediate
Our
intermediate team suffered their first defeat of this year’s championship when
they lost out to Easkey at Quigabar last Saturday evening, 0-10 to 2-10. This
was a very disappointing display and the team will hope for huge improvement
when they meet St Patrick’s in the final group game this Saturday evening at
6.30pm. At the time of writing, there was no venue set for this fixture.
Minor
An

Intermediate
Our
intermediate team made it three wins from three in the Intermediate
Championship with a 1-15 to 1-4 win over Ballymote at Corran Park last Saturday
evening. Despite some mistakes in the first half the lads led 1-7 to 1-4 at the
break, and pushed on after the interval to score eight points without reply to
secure a vital win. Attention now turns to an important meeting with neighbours
Easkey next Saturday evening at 6.30pm in Quigabar in round four. Please

Commiserations
to our u-14 team who bowed out of the championship last Thursday evening when
they lost to St Mary’s by seven points, 6-13 to 5-9 at Kent Park in the
championship quarter-final. Although this is a disappointing end for the team,
they can reflect on a solid year where they finished third in the Division Two
league and reached a shield final last July. Many of the squad will be eligible
to play in the u-13 competition which is set to get underway on September 2nd. Thanks to all players and
parents for their commitment during the year.

Intermediate
Our
intermediate team secured their Division Two status with a 1-10 to 0-13 draw
with Castleconnor at Quigabar last Sunday afternoon. In what was a very
competitive game on a wonderful day for football, the lads kicked four
unanswered points in the final five minutes to secure a point. Attention now
turns to an important game in the championship against Ballymote next Saturday
evening at 7pm in Corran Park, Ballymote. Best of luck to everyone involved for
this fixture.
Minor
A
superb comeback from our minor boys ensured a draw against Drumcliffe/Rosses
Point last Thursday in the opening round of the championship. The game finished
at 6-10 apiece, after our lads were 3-10 to 0-7 down at half-time. The team
have no game this week, so training continues.

Our
u-16 boys return to championship action on August 25th (Tuesday week) when they

U-14
Our

notes 9th August 2015
Intermediate
The
intermediate team dug out a vital win in the Intermediate Championship with a
0-10 to 1-5 win over St Farnan’s at Quigabar last Sunday afternoon. A very poor
opening period with the wind saw our lads trail by four points at the break
(1-5, 0-4), but a super second half display, where we kept St Farnan’s
scoreless and scored six points of our own ensured victory. That is the team’s
second successive win in the championship and means they are joint top of the
table with three games remaining. Next weekend, Castleconnor are the visitors
to Quigabar for a league game. Time and day are TBC, keep an eye on our
Facebook page for details.

to our u-12 boys who lost out narrowly to Bunninadden, 0-13 to 0-11, in a very
competitive league semi-final last Tuesday evening. The team has shown great
improvement over the year and were unlucky to fall just short last week. Well
done to the panel of players and their management team of Michael Duffy and
Paddy Martin on a fine year.
Golf classic
Unfortunately,
adverse weather conditions similar to those on view at St Andrews at the
British Open last weekend forced the postponement of our own golfing day out
last Friday. The golf classic is now pencilled in for Friday August 7th where hopefully the

Last
Sunday’s Connacht finals promised much but delivered little in terms of
success, with the seniors succumbing to a fine Mayo side in the main event.

GAA notes 28th June 2015
Intermediate
The intermediate team got their championship campaign off to a
winning start with a hard-earned 0-13 to 0-6 win over Cloonacool at Cloonacool
Community Park last Sunday evening. Against a well-organised home side our lads
were made work hard for scores, and led by only three points at half-time.
However, a strong second half display saw the team over the line. Well done to
Cloonacool for having their grounds in fine condition and for the post-match
refreshments, which was a great gesture. Due to Sligo’s involvement in the
Connacht final and subsequently the All-Ireland series, it’s unlikely that any
further club championship action will take place until mid-August.
Minor/U-16
Our minor and u-16 teams are back in full training following the
conclusion of the state exams. All players please attend as championship season
is fast approaching.
U-14
Commiserations to our u-14 team who lost out to Calry/St Joseph’s
in the Division Two Shield final last Wednesday evening at Scarden. An
uncharacteristically poor opening half display meant the lads were 4-6 to 0-1
down at the break, but a much improved second half saw the lads battle back to
within six points. However, the winners netted twice late on, and won out 8-9
to 5-6. Nonetheless, the lads can reflect on a very competitive league campaign
and will harbour hopes of a long summer in the championship. Well done to all
on their efforts so far.
U-12
Result of the week goes to our u-12 footballers who beat
neighbours Easkey 0-37 to 0-2 in the final round of the league last week. Well
done to everyone on a superb display of scoring. The result puts the team into
the top four, but other results this week will dictate where the lads finish in
the table.
County scene
Best wishes to Mark O’Dowd and the Sligo minor team in their
Connacht Championship semi-final with Roscommon this Friday evening. Mark put
in a very good display at corner-back last weekend as the team overcame Leitrim
4-8 to 0-12 in the quarter-final.
Golf Classic
Our bi-annual golf classic is fast approaching on July 17th at Enniscrone Golf Club. Sponsorship
opportunities are available for any businesses wishing to sponsor the event. A
team of four costs €120, with first prize four All-Ireland final tickets along

Geevagh this Friday evening at 8.15pm.
Minor
Unfortunately,
a depleted minor team bowed out of the knockout stages of the Division Two
league following a 5-13 to 2-9 defeat at the hands of Coolera/Strandhill in the
shield semi-final last weekend. The lads now have a sizable break until the
championship which takes place after the state exams in June.
U-16
The
u-16 team take on St Michael’s in the Division Three semi-final this Monday
evening (May 11th) at 7pm in Quigabar.
U-14
Our

GAA notes 3rd May 2015
Intermediate
The intermediate secured an important two points in Division Two
of the Senior Football League with a 0-13 to 5-9 win over St Farnan’s at
Templeboy last Sunday. A good opening half left the lads in a comfortable lead
and that was the foundation for the win. Next week’s round of games have been
postponed to a later date, so the team are out again when they travel to play
Geevagh the following weekend.
Minor
The minor team were beaten by Castleconnor last Thursday in
Corballa after a very disappointing display. The lads meet Ballymote tomorrow
(Monday) and a win would see them through to the semi-final of the league. Good
luck lads.
U-16
Training continues for the under-16 lads this week, in preparation
for their league semi-final next Monday (May 11th) versus St Michael’s.
U-14
Our under-14 boys fell to their first defeat of the year when they
were beaten by Tourlestrane in a very competitive game last week, 4-12 to 5-5.
A great second half display gave the lads a chance having been eight points
down at the break but the hosts held on for the win. Nonetheless, the team is
in a good position in the table and they will hope to get back on track versus
Curry on May 15th.
U-12
Our under-12 lads take on St Michael’s on Tuesday evening (May 5th) at 7pm in Quigabar.
Blotto
The blotto draw continues every Saturday night and the jackpot is
now up to €5,200. Get your ticket in any local shop or pub. Your support is
greatly appreciated.
Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA
notes 26th April 2015
Intermediate
The
intermediate team fell to a first home loss of the year when neighbours Easkey
emerged as 2-13 to 6-7 winners at Quigabar last Sunday afternoon. An
uncharacteristically lethargic opening half display contrasted a much better
second period from our boys, with the concession of six goals over the hour an
obvious worry. However, the lads will take heart from a strong second half, in
which they scored 2-12 to Easkey’s 2-3, and will hope to carry that form into
next Sunday’s clash with St Farnan’s at 3pm in Templeboy. Support as always is
appreciated and thanks to those who came out last Sunday.
Minor
The
minor boys put in a good display to defeat Coolaney/Mullinabreena 6-9 to 1-7
last Thursday evening, and will hope for a similar result when they play
Castleconnor in Corballa this coming Thursday at 7pm. The team currently
occupies second position in Division Two.
U-16
The
final group game of the Division Three league for our u-16s takes place on
Monday, April 26th at 7pm in Quigabar versus
St Michael’s. The team is top of the table at the moment and a win will seal a
final spot.
U-14
The
u-14 boys return to action with an away tie versus Tourlestrane on Wednesday
evening, April 29th, at 7pm.
U-12
Our
u-12 team enjoyed a comprehensive 0-23 to 0-3 win over Coolera/Strandhill in
Quigabar last Tuesday night. The next outing is on May 5th at home to St Michael’s.
U-8/U-10
Our
youngest players enjoyed a fun-filled blitz with Castleconnor last Friday
evening in Quigabar. Training continues on Wednesday’s from 7-8pm, all welcome.
Blotto
The
blotto draw continues each Saturday night and the jackpot is now at the €5,000

Our intermediate team got
their first win of the Division Two league campaign last Sunday afternoon when
they beat Cloonacool by seven points, 1-12 to 0-8, at a sun blessed Quigabar.
The lads played well, particularly in the second half, and will look for more
improvement ahead of next weekend’s derby versus Easkey at Quigabar at 2pm on
Sunday. All support appreciated.
Minor
The minor team are back in

notes 13th April 2015
Intermediate
Despite
a battling second half display our intermediate suffered a five point loss at
the hands of Shamrock Gaels in Coola last Sunday afternoon, 1-11 to 1-6.
Trailing by five points at the break, the lads reduced the deficit to two
points by the 55th minute but the home side
tagged on three late insurance points to secure the win. Again, there were
plenty of positive for our boys and they will hope to secure a first league win
when they host Cloonacool in Quigabar this Sunday at 2pm.
Minor/U-16
Both
the minor and u-16 teams have a break from competitive action this week.
Training continues in preparation for the latter stages of the league.
U-14
Our
u-14s are unbeaten after two games in the Division Two league following a 0-13
to 7-11 win over Castleconnor last Friday evening at Corballa. This
well-rounded team display was the best produced by the lads so far this year,
and they will look for further improvement when they meet Tourlestrane in a
couple of weeks.
U-12
The
U-12 boys get their season underway on Tuesday evening (April 14th) with an away tie against
Geevagh at 7pm. Best wishes to Michael, Paddy and the panel of players for the

The

League since 1984 last Saturday, when they defeated Mayo by a single point,
0-11 to 0-10, to claim the title. Congratulations to our own Mark O’Dowd who
played at corner-back and put in a stellar display. Quigabar was in fantastic
shape for the game and credit is due to the pitch committee and all volunteers

Minor
The
minor team lost to Easkey in the opening round of the Division Two league last
Thursday evening, 0-8 to 2-8 the final score. A decent team display was
overshadowed by poor execution and shooting, but managers and players alike
will take plenty of positive a game they dominated from start to finish. Next
Tuesday, the boys will hope to get off the mark when they play Ballymote in
Corran Park at 6.30pm.
U-16
Well
done to our U-16 team on going top of the Division Three league following a
well-earned 3-8 to 1-7 win over Bunninadden at Quigabar last Friday evening.
The lads are now two from two in the competition and will hope to continue this
run when they play Geevagh away from home next Thursday evening at 6.30pm.
U-14
Our
U-14s played out an exciting 4-11 to 7-2 draw with Easkey last Wednesday
evening. The team put in an excellent display and were extremely unlucky to
only secure a draw, after Easkey scored a last minute penalty after a dubious
decision. Nonetheless, the team will look to secure their first win when they
host Castleconnor in Quigabar next Friday at 6.30pm.

Sympathies
We extend our sympathies to the Mullaney family, Carrowhubbock
North, following the death of Eamon Mullaney last week. Eamon was a member of
our 1948 team that won the Junior Championship and was a distinguished player
on that side. Thanks to all club members who participated in the guard of
honour for Eamon last Sunday. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

Sligo
vs Galway
Thanks
to all club members who helped out in any way at the Sligo vs Galway FBD League
game in Quigabar last Sunday afternoon. The pitch was in tremendous shape and
the club-commissioned match program was very well received by all supporters.
Thanks also to the advertisers in the program for their support.
Dinner
Dance and Married vs Singles match
We held
our annual dinner dance last Monday evening in the resplendent Diamond Coast
Hotel, Enniscrone. The night was a tremendous success with a crowd of around
200 people present. Congrats to our individual award winners: Liam Cawley (Hall
of Fame), Brian Coleman (Player of the Year) and Francie Gallagher (Club Person
of the Year) and Marty Duffy (on being the main referee for last year’s
compromise rules series). Congrats also to our u14, minor and intermediate
teams on receiving their medals for winning county titles in 2014. We extend
our thanks to County Board chairman Joe Taaffe for his attendance on the night.
Overall, the evening was a great success and we now look forward to 2015 which
will hopefully bring more success.
On
Sunday, December 28th we held our annual charity
married vs singles match at Quigabar. Once again, it was an afternoon of great
craic with a large crowd present to witness the experienced married men show
the younger single lads how it’s done! All in all, it was a great success with
over €1200 raised for the Brian Farrell Family Support fund. This is an
extremely worthy cause and we thank to all those who donated on the day, it was
a great display of community spirit.
Happy
New Year
The
club wishes all players, supporters and members both at home and abroad a very
happy new year. Hopefully it is a successful one for our club.
