Club meeting

There will be an important club meeting this Sunday (November 30^th) at 4pm in the Diamond Coast Hotel, Enniscrone. All members are asked to attend.

December events

December is set to be a busy month for our club. On Friday the 12th, we will be holding our annual general meeting at 9pm in the Diamond Coast Hotel, Enniscrone. As always, we encourage as many people as possible to attend this meeting as we review 2014 and plan for the coming year.

Then, at Christmastime, our annual married vs singles match is set to take place on Sunday, December 28th at Quigabar. This is definitely a date for your diary as it is always a fantastic event, with many club legends taking to the field to test their wits against their younger counterparts, and there are always plenty of talking points in the aftermath! Everyone is welcome to play, and all proceeds will go towards a designated charity.

Finally, on Monday 29th of December, our annual dinner dance will take place in the Diamond Coast Hotel, Enniscrone. This promises to be a terrific evening’s entertainment as we honour our successful teams from 2014, as well as presenting our usual awards. More details will be made available shortly.

Missing man

Dates for your diary

As the winter sets in, we are beginning to plan for our off-season events. The club AGM, Dinner Dance and the annual married vs singles charity match will all take place in December – dates, times and venues for all of the aforementioned outings will be made available within the next week.

Compromise Rules

Best wishes to our own Marty Duffy who travels with the Irish Compromise Rules contingent to Australia today (Monday). Marty is a referee for this year’s series and is the first Sligo man to have done so since the competitions inception. Best wishes to everyone involved for this year’s series, and congrats to Marty on another fine achievement.

As the playing season has now concluded, we extend our thanks to all those from u6 to intermediate who wore the black and amber jersey this year, and thank all those who helped in any way, shape or form in the running of our teams and club in 2014. Hopefully 2015 will bring further success.

100 year anniversary – did you know?

100 years ago in 1914, our club won its first Sligo SFC title under the Enniscrone banner. At the time, the GAA was in its early days, but our parish was blessed with some fine footballers and two further Senior titles came back to the parish soon after – in 1916 Enniscrone won their second title, and in 1929 Kilglass claimed their solitary title as a standalone team. We will endeavour to find more information on the 1914 team in the next few weeks – if you have any pictures or writings in regard to that team, please get in touch.

Blotto

There was no winner of last weekend’s Blotto jackpot of €1800 – the numbers drawn were 5, 30 and 36. €25 winners were Albert McHale, Patrick Moyles, Meabh Gallagher and Martina Loftus. Next Saturday’s draw will be in the Ocean Sands Hotel for a jackpot of €2000. Your continued support is appreciated.

Surf and Turf 2014

The inaugural surf and turf fun run passed off as a terrific success last Saturday afternoon in Quigabar. The weather held out and the course was widely acclaimed by our large number of participants, with a fine turnout making the day all the better.

Winners of the team event, and the John Patrick Hannon memorial cup and a €500 sports voucher sponsored by Coleman Electronics Ltd., were Paddy Martin, Mattie Coleman, Gerry Healy, Dean Greer and Michéal Forde. Men’s winner was local Cian Mulrooney, ladies winner was Eimear O’Connor, while the juvenile awards went the way of Keelan Kilrehill (boys) and Sarah Oates (girls).

We extend our thanks to the large number of volunteers who marshalled the course and obstacles, our photographers, those who provided refreshments afterwards and the people who came to support our participants. This event was a great display of community spirit and a testament to all.

A special thanks also to those who prepared our course and made it possible for this event to become a reality, as well as our competitors.

U14

Pride of place goes to our u14’s this week following their fantastic ‘B’ Championship final victory over Calry/St Joseph’s at Connolly Park, Collooney last Saturday afternoon. The final score was 5-9 to 3-5, but Calry/St Joseph’s were gallant for large periods and led with twenty minutes to go, but goals for us midway through the half from Gavin Duffy and Alan Duffy, to add to the three we scored in the first period, secured the title.

This was a tremendous performance from our lads, and is just rewards for their effort all year. They were unlucky to lose in the league shield final in July but they worked hard since to end the year with silverware. With many of the team underage again next year, hopefully these lads won’t have to wait too long for more success.

Surf and Turf 2014

The waiting for our inaugural surf and turf fun run is almost over with the event set for this Saturday (October 25^th) starting at 12 noon from our grounds in Quigabar. The run will be over 5k (3k for 14-16 year olds) and there are team and individual categories. The race will be over 1k of public road, 1k of shoreline and then 3k across rugged cross-country terrain, with obstacles thrown in for good measure! Registration takes place on Friday night from 7pm-9pm in the Diamond Coast Hotel, and also on the morning of the event from 10am-11.45am in our clubhouse at Quigabar. To enter a team of five is €100, and they will compete for the terrific first prize of a €500 sports voucher, kindly sponsored by Coleman Electronics Ltd. We will have refreshments afterwards in our clubhouse, and we look forward to welcoming those from around the region to Enniscrone to get the bank holiday weekend off to a great start.

Our u14 team will take on Calry/St Joseph’s this Saturday afternoon at 12pm in the ‘B’ Championship final at Connolly Park, Collooney. Our u14s qualified for the ‘B’ Championship final courtesy of a comprehensive 9-15 to 2-8 win over Geevagh at Quigabar last Sunday afternoon. A terrific display from our lads ensured a final spot, with an extremely ruthless second period – in which our boys scored 7-14 with the wind – helping them to victory. Calry/St Joseph’s will provide the opposition in the final; a date, time and venue for that fixture was not available at the time of writing.

The club presented Kris Gilroy, Kilglass, with a congratulatory piece of silverware at half-time at last Sunday’s u14 game in Quigabar. Kris won three medals at the recent Special Olympics in Belgium. Congrats to Kris and his family and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 28^th September 2014

Minor

Congratulations to our minor panel and their management team on retaining the Minor ‘C’ Championship title following a hard-fought one point win over Owenmore Gaels at Markievicz Park last Saturday afternoon.

After a difficult first half our lads were five points down, but fought back with vigour to lead by a point going into injury time. However, Owenmore Gaels found a final score with the last kick of the game to send us into extra time.  Two goals in the first half of extra time proved crucial with Robert Grimes and Nathan Hannon on target, and Nathan Hannon’s point in the second period proved decisive as our lads held on for a one point win.

This was a tremendous effort from the entire tight-knit panel of players, and indeed from the management team of Brendan Murray, Ray Carden and Eugene Nelson. Congrats to all involved and we hope to see this bunch of players achieve success again as their careers within the club continues on to adult level.

Our u14 qualified for the county semi-final in unusual circumstances last week after they received a walkover from Bunninadden last Friday evening. The lads have won 4 of their five group games. Details of the semi-final fixture have yet to be released. Training continues this week.

Our u14’s play Bunninadden in the final round of the ‘B’ championship this Friday evening (September 26^th) at 6.30pm in Quigabar. A win will cement a semi-final spot. Please support.

Votes of sympathy at a recent club meeting were extended to Brian Mahon and family on the death of his mother Breda Mahon, Helen Gordon and family on the death of her father Peter Pryal and Mattie and PJ Tuffy and family, Lacken, on the death of their sister Ann McCormack.

Well done to Western Gaels on qualifying for the Sligo SHC final following a two point win over Tourlestrane last weekend. There was six Enniscrone/Kilglass players in the starting 15.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 14^th September 2014

Minor: Well done to our minor team who qualified for the ‘C’ Championship final courtesy of a 6-16 to 4-8 win over Geevagh at Quigabar last Thursday evening. They will play Owenmore Gaels in the final – a date, time and venue for that fixture has yet to be released. Keep an eye locally for details this week.

U14: Our u14’s continued their recent good form with an 8-14 to 8-7 win over Geevagh away from home in the ‘B’ Championship last Friday. This is this team’s third win on the trot and they will hope to continue this momentum when they play Bunninadden in the final round-robin game on Friday week (September 26^th).

The Sligo LGFA finals will take place in Quigabar next Saturday (September 20^th). There are three finals down for decision in the Senior, Intermediate and Junior grades. The first game (Junior final) is scheduled to get underway at 1pm.

Congrats to all club members who received Junior Cert results last week.

Junior ‘B’

The Junior ‘B’ team concluded their Division Four league campaign with a good 6-7 to 2-12 win over Tourlestrane at Quigabar last Friday. This is this sides 3^rd win on the trot and they will hope to carry this momentum into the championship campaign. No dates have yet been confirmed for this competition.

Minor

The minor team take on Geevagh in the ‘C’ Championship semi-final this Thursday evening at 6.30pm in Quigabar. Best of luck to everyone involved – please support.

Intermediate

The intermediate team were knocked out of the intermediate championship at the playoff stage for the second year in succession when they were heavily defeated by old rivals Easkey at Castleconnor last Sunday. A terribly disappointing display led to a 4-12 to 0-5 defeat. Thanks to the lads for their commitment this year and the management team for all their work. There will be better days ahead no doubt.

The junior ‘B’ team had a good 4-9 to 1-4 win over Eastern Harps last Tuesday. The lads take on Coolaney/Mullinabreena next Tuesday evening (September 2^nd) at 7pm in Achonry.

Minor

The minor team had a solid 8-5 to 2-3 win over St Pats last Thursday. They have now won three of their four group games and have qualified for the semi-finals of the ‘C’ Championship. Details of that fixture will be made available in the coming days.

U16

The u16 team take on Ballymote on Monday evening (September 1^st) at 7pm in Corran Park, Ballymote.

U14

Our u14’s scored an impressive 9-8 to 0-2 win over St John’s last week. That’s two wins from three games in the ‘B’ Championship. Their campaign continues next week.

U12

Pride of place this week goes to our u12 team who performed magnificently at the county finals day last Saturday at Markievicz Park. Having participated in the ‘B’ league, our lads defeated ‘A’ league leaders Drumcliffe/Rosses Point by a point in the quarter-final, and then beat St Farnan’s in the semi-final to reach the county ‘A’ final. Despite a good performance, our lads were defeated by St Mary’s in the decider by three points. Nonetheless, this was a tremendous performance from the lads who were within a kick of the ball of being crowned the county’s best team. Well done to all the players and the management team of Michael Duffy, Paddy Martin and Michael Hynes for a great years work – this side will prosper again in the future no doubt.

The club extends its sympathy to Brian Mahon, our Irish officer, and his family following the death of his mother last week.

The intermediate team secured a 1-12 to 2-5 win over Cloonacool last weekend in the final group game of the championship. With three wins from five games, the lads have now progressed to the playoff stages, where they will meet Easkey. The game is scheduled for next weekend – at the time of writing, no time, date or venue was available. Details will be made available during the week.

Minor

The minors play St Pats next Thursday evening at 7pm in Dromard.

U16

The u16’s have no game this week – they play on Monday week.

U14

Well done to our u14’s who secured their first win of their ‘B’ championship campaign with a comprehensive 9-4 to 1-7 win over St Pats last week. This Wednesday, they take on St Johns at 7pm in Quigabar.

U12

The u12 team are continuing preparations for their cup semi-final. A date and time has yet to be confirmed for this fixture.

A depleted intermediate team suffered a heavy defeat to St Pats last Sunday in Markeivicz Park, the final score was 4-15 to 0-3. Nonetheless, the team are on course for a play-off position and a win over Cloonacool next Saturday will secure third place in Group 2. That game is in Corran Park, Ballymote, with a 5pm throw-in. Minor

The minor team received a walkover from Owenmore Gaels last Thursday evening in the ‘C’ Championship. Their next game is on Thursday week.

U16

Our u16 boys were beaten by St Pats last week in round two of the championship. Their search for a first win in the competition continues this week when they meet Tourlestrane on Monday evening (18^th August) at 7pm in Quigabar.

U14

The u14 team take on St Pats on Thursday evening at 7pm in Dromard.

U12

Well done to our u12’s who, courtesy of a 0-31 to 0-12 win over Owenmore Gaels last week, have qualified for the county semi-final. Details of that fixture have yet to be released.

There is an intermediate championship double-header in Quigabar this Saturday – St Farnans meet Calry/St Josephs at 5pm, while Easkey play Bunninadden at 6.30pm.

Our u16’s host St Pat’s this Monday evening (August 11^th) in a re-arranged championship fixture at 7pm.

U14

The u14 boys will look to get their championship campaign back on track when they play St Pat’s on Friday evening at 7pm in Dromard.

U12

Our u12’s play Owenmore Gaels in the final round of the league this Tuesday evening (August 12^th) at 7pm in Collooney. A win could put the team into the semi-finals. Best of luck to all involved.

Next Saturday, Quigabar hosts two championship games. At 5.30pm, Easkey take on Shamrock Gaels at 5.30pm in the intermediate grade; St Mary’s and Curry meet at 7pm in the Senior Championship.

Intermediate

The intermediate team recorded their second win in group two of the Kennedys Bar Intermediate Championship last Sunday with an eventually comfortable 11 point win. A poor second quarter meant that our lads only held a one point lead at the break, but a good opening to the second half ensured a vital victory was secure. The u12 boys put in a great display vs Eastern Harps last week, only to lose by a point 0-15 to 0-14. They are still in a good position in the table – a win vs Owenmore Gaels in the final round could secure a semi-final spot. That game is fixed for Tuesday week (August 12^th).

U8/U10

Our u8’s and u10’s had an enjoyable evening last Wednesday when they hosted Easkey in Quigabar.

Our intermediate team missed out on a second piece of silverware for 2014 when they lost to St Mary’s in the Fureys Coaches Sligo SFL Division Three final 4-10 to 3-9 last Sunday afternoon at Kilcoyne Park. A poor opening half performance meant that the lads were eight points down at the interval and despite an improved display in the second period, St Mary’s ran out deserved winners. Next Sunday, the lads take on St John’s in the third round of the championship at Markievicz Park at 5.30pm in a vital game. Your support is appreciated. The intermediate team were due to play St Mary’s in the Sligo SFL Division Three league final last Sunday but the game was postponed. It now takes place next Sunday afternoon (July 27^th) at 1.30pm in Kilcoyne Park, Tubbercurry. Please support.

The Junior ‘B’ team return to action on Tuesday evening (July 22^nd) with an away fixture versus Bunninadden. Throw in at 8pm.

Minor

The minor championship game versus Geevagh scheduled for last Thursday was postponed – at the time of writing, no details regarding the revised date for the round two tie were available.

The intermediate team are continuing preparations for the final stages of the league and championship with training this week.

Next weekend (July 19^th/20^th), the Junior ‘B’ championship is scheduled to get underway with Drumcliffe/Rosses Point the opposition in round one. At the time of writing, a time, date and venue had yet to be confirmed – keep an eye out locally for details during the week.

Minor

On Thursday evening, the minor team take on Geevagh in round two of the championship. Throw in is at 7pm in Geevagh.

U16

The u16 championship begins next Monday evening (July 21^st) when our lads take on Bunninadden in Quigabar at 7pm.

U14

The u14 boys will look to secure their first piece of silverware of 2014 when they play St Mary’s in the ‘B’ shield final next Friday evening. Unfortunately no venue or time was confirmed for this fixture at the time of writing. Well done to panel members from the club who were involved with the west Sligo divisional side that played in the John Egan tournament in Kerry last weekend.

Sports Capital Grant 2014

The club received some fantastic news last Thursday with the announcement that we will receive €40,000 under the Sports Capital Grant scheme. This funding will go a long way in helping build our indoor astro-turf complex, which will be a fantastic facility when complete. We extend our gratitude to local TDs and Minister for Sport Michael Ring TD for delivering this funding.

The u14 team took part in Féile Peil na nÓg last weekend, and put in some very encouraging displays before losing in the Division 7 Shield quarter-final to Carrick Sarsfields. We hosted the Kilcormac-Killoughey club for the competition and the two sides played out a very entertaining game in Quigabar last Saturday morning. The visitors departed on Sunday – we wish them all the best in their endeavours for the remainder of the season in Offaly. Thanks to everyone who helped out in any way on what was a very successful weekend. Next Friday, the boys return to domestic action with a shield semi-final tie versus Calry/St Josephs in Quigabar at 7pm.

U12

Our u12’s continued their good form with a comfortable 0-24 to 0-8 win over neighbours Easkey last Tuesday. Their next game is away to Ballymote next Tuesday (July 8^th) at 7pm.

U8/U10

Next Saturday, our youngest footballers in the u8 and u10 age-group will take to the Markievicz Park turf for games against Bunninadden at 12pm as part of an all-county blitz. Best of luck to everyone involved, and enjoy the day.

Race night

We held a very successful race night last Saturday evening in Gilroys Bar in Enniscrone. A total of 104 horses took part in a ten race card, and an enjoyable evening was had by all. Thanks to Pat O’Dowd of Race Night Hire for running the event, and to all those who helped in ensuring the night ran smoothly. A special thanks to our many sponsors, and indeed to everyone who bought a horse for this fundraiser.

There was no intermediate league action last weekend due to Sligo playing in the Connacht Championship. On the Junior ‘B’ front, our boys had a good win over Owenmore Gaels in Quigabar, eventually winning by five points, 2-14 to 2-9.

Minor/U16

The draws for the minor and u16 championships were made last week. Our minors are in the ‘C’ competition, the u16’s will play in the ‘B’ grade.

U14

This weekend sees Feile Peile na nÓg take place in Connacht. As a host club, we will be welcoming the Kilcormac-Killoughey club from Co. Offaly on Friday next. That evening, the competition gets underway with our lads taking on Carrickmacross (Monaghan) in Kent Park, Sligo at 5.40pm. At 7pm at the same venue, our lads play Sligo’s St Molaise Gaels. The following morning (Saturday), Kilcormac-Killoughey are the opposition for the final Division 7 fixture in Quigabar at 11am. It promises to be a wonderful weekend – please support the team and we hope Kilcormac-Killoughey enjoy their stay in Enniscrone.

The parish was delighted to welcome GAA President, Liam O’Neill, last Thursday as part of his nationwide tour of schools and clubs in promoting the upcoming Feile competition. Mr. O’Neill visited both Scoil Chríost Rí and Jesus and Mary Secondary School on his visit, while he also helped launch our sponsorship deal with new main club sponsors, the Diamond Coast Hotel.

The intermediate team returned to winning ways with a 1-13 to 0-6 win over Shamrock Gaels last Saturday evening. Our u16 team begin the 2014 season with the ‘B’ league this coming Sunday. They travel to Hazelwood to take on Calry/St Josephs in round one. Throw in is scheduled for 11am – best of luck to everyone involved.

Nursery programme

The nursery programme is continuing each Wednesday in the Convent Hall. We hope everyone involved enjoy and benefit from the coaching. Thanks to all the coaches for their work to date.

Membership

Membership for 2014 is now due. Rates are to remain the same as last year – they are as follows: €30 for a child, €50 for an adult, while family membership is available for €90. A registration night will be held on Sunday, March 2^nd from 6pm to 9pm in the Diamond Coast Hotel, Enniscrone where membership can be paid. Coaching

The nursery program has now begun, and will continue every Wednesday for the next five weeks at 7pm in the Convent Hall. We hope everyone involved enjoys and benefits from the program.

Intermediate

All fixtures county-wide were postponed last weekend due to the inclement weather and poor pitch conditions. Weather permitting, our intermediate team will begin their Abbott Cup campaign on March 8/9^th vs Curry. More details next week.

Underage

Fixtures for our u14, u16 and minor teams have been released by Coiste na nÓg. Each of our sides will play in the ‘B’ grade for the upcoming league campaigns – our u16’s will be the first of these teams back in action with an away tie vs Calry/St Josephs on March 9^th.

The coaching will run for 6 weeks and starts next Wednesday, February 19th at 7pm in the Convent Hall. The club is looking for parents to help out – those who do so for the six week programme, along with completing one night of theory, will become qualified in foundation level GAA coaching. We encourage as many boys and girls, as well as parents, to become involved in what is a terrific project.

Intermediate

Our intermediate team will be the clubs first side in action in 2014 as they take on St Pats next Saturday afternoon in the Abbott Cup – throw in is at 4.30pm in Skreen. Please support the team if possible. Best of luck to everyone involved for the new year.

All players are required to register, as are all committee members and we also encourage parents and supporters to take up membership of our club. The intermediate team have returned to outdoor training following a series of indoor sessions in preparation for the new season. The team have been placed in Group ‘A’ of the Abbott Cup, alongside St Patricks and Curry - the first game is pencilled in for Saturday, February 22^nd at 4.30pm in Skreen vs St Patricks. The Division Three league campaign is expected to get underway on St Patricks weekend.

At last week’s club meeting, Eamon O’Malley and Declan Hughes were ratified to take charge of the intermediate team for a second year. They will be assisted by players John Paul Carden and Brendan Byron, who will act as selectors. We wish the players and management all the best for 2014 – pre-season training continues every Saturday evening in the Convent Hall. We also welcome back Mark Gordon who is returning to the club from Na Fianna in Dublin.

At last week’s club meeting, votes of sympathy were extended to the McGuinness, Clarke and Byron families following their recent bereavements.

Best wishes to one and all for 2014 – we look forward to what will hopefully be a successful year for our club.

Thanks to everyone who donated money to our collection on the day of our married vs singles match. €600 was raised in aid of the Alzheimer’s Association of Ireland, in memory of the late Seán Sweeney (former club chairman)

Thanks also to everyone who attended our dinner dance - the night proved to be a tremendous success.
