CLUB NOTES 2020

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 25th October 2020
Quiet time
Unfortunately, the continued prevalence of Covid-19 means it is a quiet time for clubs all around the country right now. The county scene, however, continues. Hopefully the latest set of restrictions will have the desired effect and by the time 2021 rolls around we can return to some sort of normality and a more regular club season.
There has been no detail on whether or not underage competitions that were not concluded prior to the pause in club activity will be completed this year or next.
Club Sligo
A sincere thank you to everyone who purchased Club Sligo tickets in support of our club and county. At a difficult time for voluntary organisations, it was great to see such support for this initiative.
There was good news from the draw held at Markievicz Park on Saturday, too. Mixie Jacob won not one, but two of the nine prizes on offer, collecting four All-Ireland final tickets for next year, plus €500 in cash. This is a deserved win for Mixie who has been a strong supporter of Club Sligo over many years. Congrats Mixie.
County front
The Sligo senior footballers concluded their Allianz League Division Four campaign with a 1-16 to 1-14 loss to divisional winners Limerick at Markievicz Park last Saturday. Attention now turns to a Connacht Championship semi-final clash with Galway on Saturday week in Salthill's Pearse Stadium.
A positive Covid-19 case within the senior hurling squad unfortunately led to Sligo having to concede their Christy Ring Cup fixture to Derry last weekend. This came a week after they won the Division 3B title with a narrow final win over Leitrim.
Regrettably, the county's minor footballers will not get the chance to have a tilt at provincial glory as the current restrictions do not provide for underage action at county level. Sligo were due to begin their campaign this week.
Support local
At a most difficult time for businesses, it is critical that we all endeavour to support local wherever possible over the coming weeks and in the lead-in to Christmas. We have been extremely fortunate over the years to have received the wonderful support of so many local businesses in the form of sponsorship and support - now is the time to give back. Buy local, stay local.
Mothers and Others
Well done to the Enniscrone/Kilglass Mothers and Others group on being part of the national LGFA injury prevention series. It was filmed earlier this year in our indoor astro-turf complex.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 11th October 2020

Covid-19

The latest Covid-19 developments have resulted in the GAA 'pausing' the club season. As it stands, we are unsure when, or if, our outstanding fixtures - U-12 semi-final, U-14 final, U-21 championship - will take place. The inter-county season is likely to take precedence over the coming weeks. Keep an eye out for further developments.

U-14

Ironically, our U-14s championship shield final against St Molaise Gaels was postponed last weekend - but because of the weather.

U-12

Next Sunday's U-12 semi-final against Calry/St Joseph's is postponed as per the guidelines.

Ladies football

Congratulations to Eoghan Rua on making it through to the club's first-ever Connacht final with a 1-13 to 1-8 win over Eire Og of Roscommon last weekend. They were due to play Naomh Mhuire (Oranmore-Maree) of Galway in the provincial decider last weekend at Dr Hyde Park but it too has fallen by the wayside due to Covid-19.

Hurling

Well done to the Western Gaels U-12s on winning the county title recently. They were 0-5 to 0-3 winners over Drumcliffe/Rosses Point at Scarden.

Support your club

We continue to have Club Sligo tickets on sale from any committee member. All proceeds raised from the sale of tickets from now on will go towards the club.

Good luck

Best wishes to the Sligo senior footballers and hurlers in their respective inter-county competitions over the coming weeks.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 27th September 2020

U-16

Commiserations to the Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick's U-16 footballers on a narrow one-point loss to Easkey/St Farnan's in the 'B' Championship final last Friday evening.

The lads will be disappointed that they failed to match the performance level of previous rounds, but nonetheless they battled hard throughout having trailed by four points at half-time, 0-7 to 0-3. However, in a frantic conclusion, the game ended in defeat despite their gallant efforts.

Great credit is due to all the players and management on their commitment and effort throughout the year.

U-14

Our U-14s can secure some silverware on Sunday afternoon next when they play St Molaise Gaels in the 'A' Championship shield final at Scarden, with throw-in pencilled in for 4.30pm. Best of luck to all the players and management.

U-12

Our U-12s continue their preparations this week for their upcoming county semi-final away to Calry/St Joseph's on Sunday week (October 11th).

Underage S&C programme

The Divisional Strength and Conditioning programme will be taking place for six weeks starting in October. Numbers are limited this year so players must register an online link, which is available on our Facebook page. All sessions will take place outside during the course of this year's programme.

Ladies football

Congratulations to the Eoghan Rua ladies footballers on advancing to the next round of the Connacht Club Junior Championship with a deserved 3-9 to 0-4 win over Leitrim champions Mohill on Saturday last. Well done also to Eoghan Rua's U-14 footballers on their county final win.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 20th September 2020
Intermediate

Our Intermediate footballers secured their championship status with a 2-17 to 1-9 win over St Michael's in Dromard last Saturday evening. Under pressure in the first half at times, the game was level midway through the opening period but with two goals after half-time and St Michael's finishing the game with 12 players our lads ended as winners. It brings to an end to the season and an ultimately disappointing championship campaign but it is a big relief to retain our championship status after a tough few weeks. Thanks to the management team of Michael Duffy, Fergus Sweeney, Paddy Martin, Declan Hughes and Michael Gordon for their massive effort throughout the year. Thanks also to the panel of players for their time and commitment.
U-16
The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick's U-16s will play Easkey/St Farnan's in the final of the 'B' Championship. A date, time and venue had yet to be confirmed at the time of writing.
Hurling
Well done to the Western Gaels U-14 hurlers on winning their cup final against Drumcliffe/Rosses Point last Friday.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 13th September 2020

Intermediate

Our Intermediate team have an important match on Saturday evening when they take on St Michael’s in the Intermediate Championship relegation final in Dromard from 5pm. This is a crucial game where our lads need to win to retain their championship status. Good luck to all the players and management. We will have live score updates on our Twitter account.

U-16

Well done to the Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s U-16s on producing a good display to overcome Ballymote/Bunninadden by 3-13 to 0-8 in their championship semi-final last Sunday. They now progress to a final though they still await confirmation of their opponents as the other semi-final between Easkey/St Farnan’s and Curry has gone to a replay, scheduled to take place next Friday.

U-12

Our U-12s suffered a first defeat of the year when they went under against Castleconnor by 0-13 to 0-10 in a competitive game in Corballa last week. They play Coolaney/Mullinabreena in their next fixture on Monday, September 21st.

Ladies title

Last Saturday was a historic day for ladies football in west Sligo after Eoghan Rua turned on the style to capture the Sligo LGFA Intermediate Championship title with an outstanding 4-16 to 1-9 win over Eastern Harps in the final at Markievicz Park. The players and their management team deserve huge credit for claiming the club’s second ever Intermediate title. They now set their sights on Connacht glory in the coming weeks. Congratulations to everyone involved.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 7th September 2020

Intermediate

Our Intermediate team lost to Castleconnor in their relegation play-off semi-final on Saturday by 1-7 to 0-6. A late goal from a penalty tilted matters in the winners favour but our lads will be disappointed that they failed to kick on backed by the wind in the second half. They have one more chance to save their status with a huge game against St Michael’s in the relegation final next Saturday at 5pm in Collooney. Good luck to all the players and management.

Junior B

Our Junior ‘B’ footballers put in a superb performance but lost out after extra-time to Curry by 1-14 to 2-8 after extra time in their championship quarter-final last Sunday evening. A late goal from our lads forced extra time after it finished level, 2-6 to 0-12, but a Curry goal in extra time proved to be decisive. Thanks to all the players and management for their efforts this year.

U-16

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s U-16s play Ballymote/Bunninadden in their championship semi-final next Sunday, September 13th, at 6pm in Bunninadden..

U-12

Our U-12s play Castleconnor on Monday evening (September 7th) at 6.30pm in Corballa.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 30thAugust 2020

Intermediate

Our Intermediate team play Castleconnor in the championship relegation semi-final next Saturday at 3.30pm in Easkey. This is a very important game for the team – good luck to everyone involved. As per regulations, the fixture will take place behind closed doors, but we will provide updates on our Twitter account (@enniskilgaa).

Junior B

Our Junior ‘B’ footballers are set to take on Curry in the Junior ‘B’ football championship quarter-final. At the time of writing, a date, time and venue had yet to be confirmed but it is expected it will take place at some stage next Sunday.

Minor

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s minors put in a good display but were ultimately beaten by Ballymote/Bunninadden in their ‘A’ Championship semi-final at Quigabar last Wednesday, 2-22 to 4-7. In a very entertaining battle, our lads got off to a good start but the visitors eventually worked their way into the game, though the final scoreline was somewhat unfair on our lads who performed with determination throughout. Thanks to all of the players, management and parents for their work over recent months. A word of thanks too to team sponsors Rouse Project Development and Kilgallon Stairs for their support.

U-16

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s U-16s play Ballymote/Bunninadden in their semi-final on Friday, September 11th. Preparation continues this week.

U-14

Our U-14s have put themselves in with a chance of making the ‘A’ Championship final after a 7-13 to 1-6 win over St Molaise Gaels in Quigabar last week. They play St Mary’s on Sunday (September 6th) at 6.30pm in Kent Park. Good luck to the players and management.

U-12

Our U-12s make the short trip to Corballa to take on Castleconnor on Monday evening next (September 7th) at 6.30pm.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 23rd August 2020

Intermediate

There was major disappointment for our Intermediate footballers on Sunday last as they lost out to Ballymote by 1-13 to 3-2 in their final championship group game. This was a poor performance and major improvement will be required going forward as we now enter into a relegation semi-final to secure our Intermediate status. Confirmation of that fixture will be available following conclusion of the group stages next week – our lads have a bye.

Junior B

Disappointment too for our Junior ‘B’ side on Saturday evening when they lost out by 0-18 to 1-3 to Drumcliffe/Rosses Point at Quigabar. Despite this reversal, our lads are through to the quarter-finals scheduled to take place on the weekend of September 5th/6th.

Minor

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s minors take on Ballymote/Bunninadden in the ‘A’ Championship semi-final on Wednesday evening at 7pm in Quigabar. Best of luck to all of the players and management.

U-16

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s U-16s played out a 1-11 apiece draw with Coolaney/Mullinabreena last Friday. The result means they have finished in second position in the league table. Details of a knockout stage fixture will emerge later this week.

U-14

Our U-14s take on St Molaise Gaels in their next outing in the ‘A’ Championship on Thursday, August 27th at 6.15pm. This is a home game at Quigabar.

U-12

Our U-12s overcame the challenge of Tourlestrane last Tuesday by 0-14 to 0-8. They have a break now before their next game against Castleconnor on Monday, September 7th.

Our lads will have home advantage for their last four clash with Ballymote/Bunninadden on Wednesday, August 26th. Throw-in is scheduled for 7pm.

U-16

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s U-16s had a 4-5 to 2-9 win over Castleconnor last Friday. They take on Coolaney/Mullinabreena next Friday (August 21st) at 6.15pm in Achonry.

U-14

Our U-14s had a good win in the ‘A’ Championship over Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in Quigabar on Sunday evening, winning by a margin of four points, 6-7 to 3-12. This was a good response to a 5-15 to 1-3 loss against Eastern Harps the previous Thursday. They face a trip to Grange to take on St Molaise Gaels in their fixture on Thursday, August 27th at 6.15pm.

U-12

Our U-12s take on Tourlestrane on Tuesday evening at 6.15pm in Quigabar.

Over 90 boys and girls had an enjoyable week at our annual Cul Camp at Quigabar last week. Thanks to all the parents, players and of course the coaches for their work.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 9th August 2020

Intermediate

Our Intermediate footballers suffered a disappointing 2-18 to 2-9 loss against St Molaise Gaels in the championship last Sunday. After a slow start our lads worked their way back into contention and had the chances to hit the front in the third quarter. Two St Molaise Gaels goals in the final ten minutes put the result beyond doubt, despite our lads enjoying a numerical advantage. They will regroup and build for their important final group game against Ballymote on Sunday, August 23rd at 1pm in Tourlestrane.

Junior B

Our Junior B footballers produced an impressive display to beat Geevagh by 4-10 to 0-6 in Geevagh in their opening championship game of 2020 on Saturday evening last. They have next weekend off, before hosting Drumcliffe/Rosses Point in round two on Saturday week.

Minor

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s minors suffered their first defeat of the campaign last Wednesday when Ballymote/Bunninadden emerged as 1-15 to 1-9 winners at Corran Park. The group is finely poised ahead of the final round of fixtures on Wednesday evening next, when our lads take on Calry/St Joseph’s/St John’s in Hazelwood at 6.30pm.

U-16

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s U-16s enjoyed a 4-8 to 1-8 win over Tourlestrane last Friday. They have two fixtures this week – on Monday August 10th they play away to Geevagh/St Michael’s at 6.30pm before a clash with Castleconnor next Friday (August 14th) at 6.30pm.

Our U-12s put in a strong finish to beat St Patrick’s by 0-12 to 0-6 in their clash at Quigabar last week. The lads have this week off from competitive action, before returning to the fray for a meeting with Tourlestrane at Quigabar next Tuesday (6.15pm throw-in)

Cul Camp

Our annual Cul Camp takes place in Quigabar this week (August 10th to 14th). We wish all the children and the coaches an enjoyable week.

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 2nd August 2020

Intermediate

Our Intermediate footballers earned their first win of their Intermediate Championship campaign with a hard-earned 3-10 to 2-12 win over Bunninadden in Cloonacool last Sunday. Six points down at half-time (1-8 to 0-5) and down again late on with 14 men (2-11 to 2-9), our lads showed great spirit to nudge in front and win out. They now look ahead to a clash with St Molaise Gaels in Collooney next Sunday at 2pm.

U-16

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick’s U-16s play Tourlestrane on Friday evening next, August 7th, at 6.30pm in Dromard. Last week’s fixture against Geevagh/St Michael’s was postponed due to a bereavement in St Michael’s – our sympathies to all.

U-14

U-12

Enniscrone/Kilglass GAA notes 26th July 2020

Intermediate

Our intermediate footballers suffered an opening round defeat in the championship on Sunday when they lost out to Curry at Dromard by 2-19 to 2-12. In a high scoring encounter, our lads trailed 0-12 to 0-6 having played into the breeze in the first half, but conceded two goals in the third quarter after the resumption. Nonetheless, they battled well to bring themselves back into contention in the closing stages. They will look to build on the positives ahead of next week's crucial clash against Bunninadden in Cloonacool at 2pm. Again, crowd restrictions will be in place and it will be an all-ticket affair. Details will be made available during the week.

Minor

The Enniscrone/Kilglass/St Patrick's minor team produced an excellent late comeback to overcome St Mary's by a single point, 4-11 to 4-10, in their championship meeting at Quigabar last Wednesday. Dinner Dance

We enjoyed a great night at our annual club dinner dance last Saturday evening. In the wonderful surroundings of the Diamond Coast Hotel, we were delighted to welcome Corofin’s Dylan Wall as our special guest - both of Dylan’s parents come from our parish.

Arguably the moment of the night was a prolonged standing ovation for the great PJ Kavanagh, who was the Hall of Fame award winner. Whether it was in the black and amber of Enniscrone/Kilglass or the black and white of Sligo, PJ always excelled between the four white lines and it was fitting that his previous and indeed continued contribution to our club be recognized.

Johnny Mullaney’s commitment to the club was also honoured as he was chosen as the Club Person of the Year. Johnny’s devotion in particular to looking after our grounds at Quigabar is widely appreciated and commended by all of us within the club.

The Player of the Year award (The Freeman Memorial Shield) went to Cian Mulrooney for his consistent high standards on the field throughout 2019, while Josh Ellis won the Young Player of the Year award (McManus Memorial Shield) for his performances in 2019.

Our Mothers and Others also held their awards on the night: Carmel O’Neill was chosen as the Club Person of the Year; Fidelma Starrs won the Best Newcomer while Caroline Roberts collected the Most Dedicated Player Award. The Mothers and Others make a valuable contribution to our club and we are delighted that their group continues to go from strength to strength.

Our thanks go to Dylan Wall, the Diamond Coast Hotel and all who attended.

Here’s to 2020.

He takes the reigns from outgoing chair PJ Kavanagh, who occupied the position since last year. Before that, Declan Rouse held the role for several years and put in a trojan amount of work. We wish Marty every success in his new role.

There was a change of secretary too, with Shane Hargadon taking the role on as Brendan Murray stepped down. Brendan too has contributed much over several years as secretary and we look forward to his continued involvement as vice-chair.

They were the only major changes at the meeting, which heard of a progressive year in 2019 as well as plans for the coming year.

The following committee is in place for 2020.

President: John P Mullaney; Vice President: Paul Tuffy; Chairman: Marty Duffy; Vice Chairman: Brendan Murray; Secretary: Shane Hargadon; Assistant Secretary: Carmel O'Neill; Treasurer: Eugene Nelson; Assistant Treasurer: Claire Beglane & Joe Cawley (development);

PRO: Cathal Mullaney & David Tuffy; County Board Delegate: Brendan Murray; Irish Officer: Tom McManus; Registrar/Membership: Maurice Sweeney; Pitch Committee: Paddy Tuffy, Mixie Jacob, Johnny Mullaney, Liam Cawley, Michael Gordon; Childrens Officer: Martin McHale; Coaching & Schools Coordinator: John Paul Carden; Grants, Funding etc. : Mattie Coleman, Mixie Jacob, Joe Cawley, Eugene Nelson; Blotto Coordinator: Brian Coleman.Insurance Officer: Shane Hargadon.

Intermediate team management
Last Friday’s AGM also saw the ratification of Michael Duffy as our new Intermediate football team manager.

Michael brings significant experience to the role having been extensively involved at club, schools and county level, having most recently managed the Sligo minor team in 2018 and 2019. Michael’s backroom team is composed of Fergus Sweeney (Knockmore), Paddy Martin, Declan Hughes and Michael Gordon. Best wishes to Michael, his management team and all the players in 2020.
